Book retreats are gaining popularity as vacationers opt for reading — here’s 9 getaways in the US
Travelers are increasingly looking to make their vacations more novel — by spending their time away reading books.
Google revealed that searches for “book retreats” hit an all-time high at the end of 2025, and “reading weekend” has been a top-trending term in 2026.
Reading retreats, meanwhile, are on the rise with Gen-Z and Millennial travelers, gaining traction from the popularity of “Book-Tok,” the community on social media app TikTok where users share book recommendations and reviews.

Why Book Retreats Are the Next Big Thing in Travel
For many travelers with busy everyday lives, taking a vacation provides an opportunity to finally pick up that must-read bestseller. Becoming engrossed in a good story can be just as relaxing as a trip to the spa or a dip in the pool. But what if you wanted to take things up a notch? Reading retreats — a step up from community book clubs — are quickly gaining popularity in the world of travel. Bespoke itineraries build in time for structured group discussions with like-minded readers, provide valuable reading time away from the distractions of home, and visit fascinating literary-inspired sites. How Reading Retreats Became a Major Travel Trend
When Jenna Reilly spotted an Instagram video about an adult summer reading camp in France, she had a similar feeling. “I thought it was such a cool concept and hadn’t seen anything like that. It seemed like the kind of trip I would want to take,” she says of the inspiration behind Book a Break, which she co-founded with Kristen Waidalowski.
The duo’s first reading retreat was earlier this year, coinciding with the release of Rebecca Yarros’ Onyx Storm. Aside from giving people time to read, Book a Break also offers programming and activities for the 10 to 20 guests who attend. For example, there might be a virtual Q-and-A with an author, themed-martinis inspired by a particular book, or craft sessions.

A book lover's dream: Friends launch 'Book a Break' reading retreats
CUMBERLAND – For those who love reading, imagine taking a getaway trip to exclusively do just that, alongside others who also enjoy it, with other fun activities and beautiful outdoor surroundings sprinkled in.
For many, that may be the definition of pure paradise, and it’s also the basic premise of Book a Break retreats, a recent start-up and labor of love by former co-workers to friends Kristen Waidalowski and Jenna Reilly.
The business organically developed from the duo’s own love of reading and their corporate backgrounds in luxury and customer service, as they shared with The Breeze.

Franklin Resident Leaves Corporate America to Curl Up with a Good Book
Recently, Jenna Reilly took a step away from the constant hustle of the corporate world. The Franklin resident needed time to figure out her direction, time to take a break, and time to do more of what she loves, especially curling up with a good book. She loved to delve into great stories, sometimes getting so excited about a book or a book series that she’d seek out other fans…
Reilly, her friend, Kristen Waidalowski, and another travel agent friend in Florida, Kelly Baldwin, decided to try their hand at creating a new business, one they’re calling Book a Break (www.bookabreak.org). So far, they’ve planned book retreats of their own, with the first starting this month in the Berkshires focusing on the book, Onyx Storm, part of the Fourth Wing series.
